🔁 Swap Box: The Blocker That Plays Keep-Away With Your Marbles
You spot the exact color you need locked inside a box near the top of the board, but the box has a little door on its face and the door will not budge. That is a Swap Box, and it is one of the most annoying blockers in Marble Sort because it never blocks you the same way twice.
Instead of sitting there like a frozen tray or a plain wall, it turns every move after you touch it into a timing puzzle. Drop the wrong thing and the door you wanted swings shut. Read on and you will learn to make the door open on your schedule, not the board's.
What a Swap Box Actually Is
A Swap Box is a special container that seals nine colored marbles behind a narrow vertical door on its front. From the outside it looks like an ordinary box, which is exactly why players get fooled.
While the door is shut, you simply cannot drop the box no matter how badly you want those marbles. The moment the door slides open, you can tap the box and spill all nine marbles straight onto the board.
That single rule — open means usable, closed means stuck — is the whole game this feature plays with you.
How You First Wake It Up
To get the box moving, drop one ordinary box directly beside it. We mean the four honest sides — straight up, down, left, or right. Corners do not count, so stop aiming at diagonal neighbors and wondering why nothing happens.
Here is the trap most players walk into: the first nearby drop does not pop the door open. It only flips the internal switch to "armed." The door stays shut, and people panic, thinking they did it wrong.
You did it right. The box is now live; it is just waiting for the toggle to land on the open side before it will cough up its marbles.
The Toggle That Runs the Whole Board
Once the Swap Box is armed, the rules shift in a sneaky fashion. From that point, each box you set down anywhere on the board inverts the door — shut turns to open, open turns to shut.
Notice the box you drop no longer has to touch the Swap Box. You might activate it, wander off to clear a far corner, come back, and find the door on the wrong side because some unrelated drop flipped it.
That is why Swap Box feels impossible to track: it quietly piggybacks on moves you made for totally different reasons. The fix is to decide, before each drop, which state you want the door in when you finally tap it.
Why It Ruins Otherwise Easy Levels
A Swap Box hides nine marbles, and those marbles are almost always the colors you are shortest on. The game loves to tuck useful tones behind a timing gate so you cannot just feed the bottom boxes in a straight line.
Worse, because the door toggles, a rushed player keeps closing it right before grabbing the payload. You burn move after move, the conveyor clogs with junk, and the one box you needed sits there doing nothing.
Treat the nine marbles as a prize you earn by discipline, not by spamming drops. The level is not hard because of the colors — it is hard because of the clock inside the box.
A Simple Plan That Beats the Timing
First, only arm the Swap Box when you are actually ready to use it on the next beat. Do not wake it up three moves early just because you can.
Second, before tapping, confirm the locked color is one the bottom can absorb right now and that you have room. Then make one safe "dummy drop" beside it to swing the door open, and tap the box immediately on the same breath.
Third, resist the urge to drop a different box first — that second drop slams the door shut again and you are back to counting. If the conveyor is tight, clear a little space before you start the sequence so the released nine have somewhere to land.
Where You Will Meet Swap Box in Real Levels
Early Swap Box levels hand you the nine marbles in a color the bottom badly needs, teaching you the toggle without much punishment if you fumble.
Later stages stack the box behind other blockers or feed it colors that have no open receiver yet, forcing you to open the door, hold the marbles on the belt, and only release them once a slot frees up.
When you see the door, pause. Decide the state you want, make the dummy drop, and take the payload before the board flips it against you.
